Translation:
Mourn, as much as is seemly, traveller, the death, late enough indeed for him, but, alas, all too soon for his friends, of Gabriel Towerson, Professor of Ecclesiastical Theology, once Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford and subsequently most efficient and faithful Rector of not only this church but also of St Andrew Undershaft London. If you are eager to emulate his virtues (it is right that all should study him) unroll and re-roll his sacred writings. Above all work unceasingly to copy his frank, open mind, his integrity, his sincerity, his friendly manner and particularly his extraordinary modesty. Be affable, but not facetious - severe, but not too harsh. No one devours books, sacred and secular, more eagerly than he - nor takes them out more readily. Finally may you be helpful and loving to all and benefit others in whatever way you can. Don’t spare yourself. All of the Towersons who knew this man well and to whom he was very close on earth - and whom his death left with a sad longing for him - wanted this monument - a symbol of a friendship that would never die - to be erected. He died on 14th October 1697 aged 63.
